Each year, the Friends of Connie Hagar combine their support with teams of other birding organizations to host the annual event.  This event is a special event of the Texas Tourism Development Council of the Rockport-Fulton area Chamber of Commerce.  It was conceived by, and is organized and conducted by area residents and natural history organizations, including "The Friends".  This is an example of an important relationship between those interested in our natural heritage and the Chamber,

City and County.

The Celebration's goal is to encourage visitors to our communities to see migrating hummers, and provide them with excellent educational and inspirational programming on natural and cultural history of the area.  The event has been extremely successful and has become a model for other towns across the U.S.  Over 800 U-Haul trailers now sport a Ruby-throated Hummingbird identifying Rockport and the Celebration.  National news coverage (NBC, FOX, CNN, Eyes of Texas, Parks & wildlife) and local stations have broadcast the event.  "Friends" continues to be the driving force behind this fantastic event.

Mature Male Rufous from the Beree Yard, October 2003

"We had maybe four immature male Rufous Hummingbirds last winter. I don't know if this is one returning with all his male glory--but I think mature male Rufous have to be one of God's best gifts."

Our Biggest Event Ever!

Site of the Rockport Cottages: Church St; 1st site dedicated by Roger Tory Peterson for the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail.

Connie Hagar Wildlife Sanctuary: extends along the coastline from Cove Harbor to the shores of both the Aransas and Matagorda Island Wildlife Refuges.

Historical Marker: Texas State Historical Commission breaks tradition and honors Connie Hagar with a historical marker allowing the dedication to take place several years earlier than usual following an individual's death.

Demonstration Gardens: With the help and support of the Texas Dept. of Transportation, the group made this roadside stop on 35N a tourist focus, by creating the 3 gardens: the pond, the hummingbird and butterfly garden, and the fruit and berry producing garden.  This site served as the inspiration for the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail.

Gravesites of Connie and Jack Hagar: Jack died August 20, 1962 and Connie passed away on November 29, 1973.  Both are laid to rest at the Rockport Cemetery which overlooks Connie's favorite birding spot, Little Bay and what used to be Frandolig Island (now Key Allegro).
